The 75th edition of the Academy Awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) was held on March 23, 2003 at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, United States, awarding the best films of the year 2002. The ceremony was presented by Steve Martin.
The movie with the most nominations at the Academy Awards 2003 was Chicago with 13 nominations and The film that won the most awards was Chicago, winning 6 of the 12 nominations.
The musical theater classic, Chicago, won Best Picture, marking a milestone as it was the tenth musical to receive this award since 1968, when Oliver! took the prize.
At just 29 years old, Adrien Brody won the Oscar for Best Actor, becoming the youngest to obtain this recognition in that category.
Two film legends, Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson, made history in this edition of the Oscars. Streep, with her thirteenth nomination, established herself as the actress with the most nominations in the history of the Academy, while Nicholson, with her twelfth nomination, became the most nominated actor.
Julianne Moore became the ninth performer to receive two simultaneous nominations in the categories of Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for her work in different films.
Rap music burst into the Oscars with Eminen's "Lose Yourself" from the movie 8 Mile, becoming the first song of the genre to win the award for Best Original Song.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: This epic sequel marked a milestone by being the fourth of its kind to earn a Best Picture nomination.
Curiously, a unique situation also occurred: the Oscar nomination of a fictional character, Donald Kaufman, co-author of the script for the film "Adaptation, The Orchid Thief" with Charlie Kaufman. Despite the nomination, Kaufman does not exist in real life and did not win the award.
Roman Polanski's drama The Pianist took home three awards, including Best Director. However, Polanski was unable to attend the ceremony due to his status as a fugitive in the United States since 1977. Harrison Ford had the honor of accepting the award on his behalf.
The ceremony lasted 3 hours and 30 minutes and awarded the best films of 2002 in 24 categories.
