History of the David di Donatello Awards
In 1955 the Art and Culture Committee and the International Film Club met under the direction of Italian politician and businessman Italo Gemini, to give life to the David di Donatello Awards.
The David di Donatello Awards ceremony was held for the first time in 1956 at the historic cinema “Cinema Fiamma” in Rome.
From its inception until 1970, the category of "Best Film" did not exist, but the award was given in the category of "Best Producer". Over time, several changes were made to reach the 25 categories that are currently delivered.
In 2006, 8 special prizes were awarded to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the prize, called "David del Cinquantenaire", awarded to the most prestigious representatives of the main categories in the history of Italian cinema of the time:
Piero Tosi (costume designer).
Giuseppe Rotunno (director of photography).
Ennio Morricone (musician).
Dino de Laurentiis (producer).
Francesco Rosi (director).
Suso Cecchi D'Amico (screenwriter).
Mario Garbuglia (set designer).
Gina Lollobrigida (actress).
