History of the Golden Globe Awards
The Golden Globes awards were held for the first time in 1944 at the 20th Century-Fox studios, to honor the best film achievements of the year 1943. The Awards were held thanks to the fact that several writers came together to form the Association of the Hollywood Foreign Press (HFPA).
The category of "Special honorific prize" was established in 1950, to recognize the outstanding achievements in the film industry. The first special honorific award was given to the American director and producer Cecil B. DeMille. Then the name of this category was changed Cecil B. DeMille Award.
The income obtained by the presentations of the Golden Globes awards has allowed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to donate millions of dollars to organizations, fund scholarships and programs related to film and television.
Rules of the Golden Globe Awards
The films and TV shows, which are eligible to be nominated for the Golden Globes, must be premiered between January 1 and December 31 of the year prior to the award and have lasted at least seven consecutive days at its launch in Los Angeles in U.S.
Films, except for short films, must have a minimum duration of 70 minutes.
For the Best Foreign Language Film award, the film is required to be presented in your country and does not require it to be shown in the United States. However, if a film was not released in its country of origin due to censorship, it may qualify if it had a one week premiere in the United States during the regulated period. Unlike the Oscar Awards, no limit is set for the number of movies sent from a country. It also requires that at least 51 percent of the dialogues in the film should not be in the English language.
For television program awards, it is required that they be broadcast and performed in the United States or that it be a US co-production. Programs must be scripted and presented during prime time hours from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
Television films should not be entered in the categories of films or television
For actor awards in a television series, actors are required to appear at least six episodes in the qualifying year. And for the actors of a television movie or miniseries they must appear at least 5% of the time.
Nominations and Votes at the Golden Globes Awards
To elect the nominees for the Golden Globe Awards, each member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association receives a ballot to vote for the top five options in each category. The nominees in each category are the five selections that receive the most votes. And to choose the winners final ballots are received in mid-December, for the final vote.
Golden Globe Awards Ceremony
The Golden Globe Awards are broadcast on television to 167 countries around the world, ranking as the third most viewed awards ceremony of all the years, just behind the Oscars and the Grammy Awards.
Curiosities
In 2008, due to the strike of the Writers Guild of the United States, the 65 Golden Globe Awards were not broadcast live, due to threats from writers and striking actors to boycott the event.
