History of the Mar del Plata Festival

The Festival was inaugurated on March 8, 1954 by then-President Juan Domingo Perón.

Initially it was based on giving samples from 18 countries in order to publicize cinema as a spectacle, but from 1959 it went from being an exhibition festival to a competitive festival, awarding the Ombú Prize, which later became be called the Astor Awards in honor of the prominent Argentine musician Astor Piazzolla.

Between 1971 and 1995, the Mar del Plata International Film Festival was canceled for political and economic reasons after the establishment of a military government in Argentina. In 1996, the festival was presented again completely renovated, obtaining "category A", the highest established by the FIAPF.
