Science fiction is a film genre that recounts events based on supposed technological and scientific achievements. It uses representations of spaceships, robots, aliens, alien planets, time travel, etc. They generally make explorations or criticisms of different social, political and philosophical aspects.

The events that occur in Science Fiction films emphasize the impact that technological, scientific, social and cultural advances can have on individuals or societies.

1900s to 1920s

This film genre begins with silent cinema, with black and white short films with technological, humorous and horror themes, such as the short film "Journey to the Moon" (1902) by Georges Méliès, "Frankenstein" (1910) and "Dr. "Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1912). In 1916 the feature film "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" was released, based on the novel by Jules Verne. Some directors manage to propose a type of social criticism, as in the case of "Metropolis" (1926) by the Austrian director Fritz Lang.

1930s to 1950s

In the 1930s, sound appeared as an innovative and indispensable element in film production. The first feature film from an American studio "King Kong" (1933) is released. Also "Lost Horizons" (1937), directed by Frank Capra and the British "The Afterlife" (1936).

In 1940, "Dr. Cyclops" was released, one of the first color science fiction films.

In the 1950s, although the films continued to be low-budget B series and thanks to new technologies and public interest, "Ultimatum to Earth" (1951) by Robert Wise was released, quickly becoming one of the most influential of the genre.

1960s to 1980s

In the first decade, science fiction film production decreased significantly, however, in 1968 films such as Franklin Schaffner's "Planet of the Apes" and Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" were released, transforming the film genre.

In the 70s, thanks to the rise of man's first trip to the Moon, science fiction regained strength and "Star Wars" (1977) by George Lucas and "Star Trek" (1979) by Robert Wise were released. In 1982, Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" appears, presenting an undesirable future where the relationship between humanity and technology is close. This film marks the birth of Cyber Punk, a current or subgenre of science fiction. In this decade, "Alien, the eighth passenger" (1979) by the same director was also released.

In the 1980s, films such as "E. T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" (1982) by Steven Spielberg, "Terminator" (1984) by James Cameron and "Akira" (1988) from Japan and "Gandahar: Light Years" (1988) emerged. ) from France.

Decades 1990 – 2000

With the appearance of the Internet, the establishment of Cyber Punk and the emergence of new technologies to improve special effects, the film production of this era is optimized, the themes of extraterrestrial invasions, genetic experimentation and catastrophes become constant. Many filmmakers take up a critical and political stance when exposing human conditions. The notable films of the Science Fiction genre at this time are: "Total Recall" (1990), "Jurassic Park" (1993), "Independence Day" (1996), "The Matrix" (1999) by the Wachowski brothers, "Artificial Intelligence (2001), "Avatar (2009), etc.
