The story centers on an experienced train engineer (Denzel Washington) about to be laid off as part of company cutbacks and the newbie conductor (Chris Pine) hired to replace him. They find themselves in a race against time to stop an unmanned, half-mile-long freight train carrying enough combustible liquids and poisonous gas to wipe out a nearby city.
