Soviet troops under the command of Georgy Zhukov in the course of three offensive operations carried out by the Soviet Union against Nazi German forces during World War II, in the city of Rzhev to protect Moscow and surround the 9th Army located in the city. The fierce fighting in this small area lasted a total of 13 months, until March of the following year, but the Germans did not achieve their intended goal: Rzhev could not be eliminated. In March 1943, the Germans themselves abandoned their positions, straightened the front line, and transferred troops and equipment to Kursk. The battles near Rzhev are one of the bloodiest episodes of the Great Patriotic War. The total losses of the Red Army, according to official figures, exceeded one million people. Rzhev and the neighboring cities were completely destroyed.
