The southern drama, also called southern gothic, is a literary and film subgenre that emerged in the 19th century and was consolidated in the 20th century. Characteristics of Southern drama include haunting or eccentric character narration, dilapidated or abandoned settings (plantations, swamps, lonely deserts, and small towns), supernatural or fantastical elements, grotesque situations, and other sinister events related to or stemming from poverty, alienation , crime and violence. The themes are a reflection of the culture existing in the South after the defeat of the Confederacy in the American Civil War. Racism, slavery, excessive violence, and religious extremism are frequent themes in these works.
