This is the story of Aristides Sousa Mendes, Portuguese Consul in Bordeaux who, defying direct government orders in 1940, rescued more than 30,000 people including 10,000 Jews, by granting them safe passage to Portugal. In 1966, Yad Vashem named him Righteous Among the Nations. He is considered to have achieved the largest single rescue operation of World War II.
