Synopsis

This taut, twisting thriller stars William Hurt as Darryl Deever, a quiet New york City night janitor who leads a simple, unassuming life while dreaming of the woman of his fantasies, Tony (Sigourney Weaver), a beautiful local newscaster. Darryl's life changes drastically when he discovers the body of a prominent political figure in his building and finally gets a chance to meet Tony, who is investigating the mysterious murder. Hoping to spend more time with Tony, Darryl pretends to know more than he does. However, the ruse is successful, which gets him closer to the object of his obsession but puts his life in danger from the real killers, who also believe his story. Darryl and Tony's relationship becomes more complex and filled with danger as they investigate the murder together, throwing them both into a dangerous world of international scandal and political intrigue. James Woods costars as Darryl's paranoid and slightly sleazy best friend who manages to incriminate himself in the high-stakes crime and is subsequently followed by police officer Morgan Freeman. William Hurt delivers a contemplative and courageous performance offset by Sigourney Weaver's well-bred and seductive character in this exciting combination of mystery, romance, and social commentary written by screenwriter Steve Tesich.
