Black Mirror: 15 Million Merits (TV)

Synopsis

A satire on entertainment shows and our insatiable thirst for distraction set in a sarcastic version of a future reality. In this world, everyone must cycle on Bike machines (literally, "getting on their bikes", a common British idiom) within a facility of touchscreen cells in order to power their surroundings and generate currency for themselves called Merits. Everyone is dressed in a grey tracksuit and has a "doppel", a virtual avatar inspired by the Miis and 360 Avatars, that people can customise with clothes, for a fee of merits. It is shown that doing everyday activities such as brushing their teeth or playing a video game will be constantly interrupted with an advertisement that they cannot skip or even mute (without paying) and cannot ignore (the ads on every wall will pause and trigger a high frequency signal if they close their eyes). Larger people are considered to be second-class citizens, and work either as cleaners around the Bike machines (where they receive frequent verbal abuse) or are humiliated on game shows.
