Wild Man Blues (1998)

After all sorts of creepy accusations, protracted legal battles and the breakup with Mia Farrow, Woody Allen has never been the same. How to show, then, that he's the same, old schlemiel we've known and loved for years? Commission this highly entertaining, revealing look into Allen's life, chronicling a 1996 European concert tour he took with his Dixieland band. Director Kopple was given all sorts of access to Allen, although he had say over final cut. Kopple captures Allen in some hilarious (Woody receives an award for playing in the dark!) and often uncomfortable situations. Woody is the stressed, hypochondical, pampered American filmmaker, and his need for nurturing is obvious when we meet his elderly parents. Neither are impressed with their son's success. Dad shows more interest in the engraving of Woody's award, while Mom wishes he had chosen another profession. Oh, well. That's show biz.
