After decades of working in the printing industry in Calcutta, eastern India, Tarini reached retirement age. She spends her days at home, having turned down her son's invitation to come to the United States. Then a friend of hers shows her a job ad. Although she has never published a book, Tarini used to tell made-up stories to her friends in her youth, and the announcement of a storyteller in Ahmedabad, western India, piques his interest. The patron turns out to be a wealthy businessman who suffers from incurable insomnia. Tarini stays at the man's house and tells him stories every night, and the man's insomnia seems to improve. However, their relationship unfolds in another story with a twist.
