In 1900, in the middle of the Thousand Days War, Hortensia and Salvador discover Dionisia, a wounded indigenous woman in the stable of their farm. She has the rebel flag braided into her hair. A large reward is being offered for her capture. The powerful Aristídes, Hortensia's father, and Heriberto, his trusted man, will not rest until they find her. Hortensia, who has been a victim of her father's cruelty, debates between handing the woman over and collecting the reward, which would pay for the costly treatment of her very sick daughter, or protecting the indigenous woman and facing the ghosts of her past
