On June 26, 1941, the German army invaded Russia. Maria João photographs Lisbon full of refugees arriving in Portugal. When his father-in-law Nicolau suffers an accident, he asks Maria João to help him manage the company.
A nun is called upon to adopt her 15-year-old nephew, and as a consequence religion, family and love become entangled.
