History
At first, the Academy of Arts and Cinematographic Sciences of Spain, considered Buñuel awards, Lumière Awards or Soles Awards, finally decided to name them as Goya Awards, arguing that the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya, was world-renowned and distinctive of the Spanish culture. Among the arguments that were exposed, it was also specified that the most important works of the Spanish painter possessed a sequential treatment similar to that used in the cinema.
The first ceremony of the Goya Awards was held on March 17, 1987 at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Madrid, Spain.
The categories of Best Direction of Production and Best Special Effects were presented in the 1988 edition. In 1989 the category of Best Screenplay for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay was separated.
The categories of Best New Director and Best Animated Film were added in the 1990 edition.
Figurine of the Goya Awards
The Goya award consists of a bronze bust in the form of the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya, made by the sculptor José Luis Fernández, weighing almost 3 kg.
The first statuettes delivered were works by the sculptor Miguel Ortiz Berrocal, and consisted of a removable sculpture made of bronze, which combined the bust of the painter Francisco de Goya with a film camera. The sculpture weighed almost 15 kg.
Due to its great weight in 1990 it was decided to make a new design of the trophy being the sculptor José Luis Fernández, the new creator of the statuette, developing a new bronze bust, inspired by the work of the Spanish sculptor Marià Benlliure i Gil. This statuette, would become the official one from the fourth edition.
